The story of goddess Sita across epic traditions and sacred memory

Sita is regarded in Hindu tradition as an avatar of goddess Lakshmi and the consort of Rama. Devotees celebrate her on Sita Navami, and she serves as the chief goddess of the Ramanandi Sampradaya. Tradition holds that she is the daughter of Bhumi and was adopted by King Janaka of Videha.

Sita chose Rama as her husband during a svayamvara, later accompanying him and Lakshmana into exile in the Dandaka forest. Tradition holds that Ravana abducted Sita and held her captive in Ashoka Vatika in Lanka until Rama rescued her. Some scriptures mention her previous birth as Vedavati, whom Ravana had attempted to molest, while some versions of the epic state Maya Sita, an illusion created by Agni, was abducted while the real Sita hid in fire.

Following the war, some versions relate that Sita underwent an Agni Pariksha to prove her chastity. After returning to Ayodhya, Rama and Sita were crowned king and queen. Rama later sent Sita away after a man questioned her fidelity to maintain the dignity of his kingdom.

For devotees, Sita remains an enduring symbol of devotion, dignity, and faith across sacred traditions.
