Tirumala Venkateswara Temple preserves centuries of history across seven sacred peaks

The Venkateswara Swami Temple stands in the hills of Tirumala in Tirupati Urban Mandal, Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh.

Dedicated to Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu also known as Balaji, Govinda, and Srinivasa, the site is one of eight Vishnu Swayambhu Kshetras.

Belief holds that Venkateswara appeared to save mankind from the trials of Kali Yuga, giving the site the names Kaliyuga Vaikuntha and Kaliyuga Prathyaksha Daivam.

The temple sits on Venkatadri, the seventh peak of the Seshachalam Hills range rising about 980 meters (3,220 ft) above sea level, on the southern banks of the holy water tank Sri Swami Pushkarini.

Local tradition states the seven peaks represent the seven heads of Adisesha, leading to the name Temple of Seven Hills for the site in Tirumala town, which covers about 10.33 square miles (26.75 square kilometers).

Tradition attributes the temple to Tondaiman rulers, with later expansions under the Cholas, Pandyas, and Vijayanagar dynasties starting from 300 CE in the Dravidian architecture style.

The Garbhagriha, known as Ananda Nilayam, houses the deity facing east under the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition of worship.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), an autonomous body under the control of the Government of Andhra Pradesh with its head appointed by the state government, administers the temple.

Visitors and pilgrims can trace the heritage, administration, and traditions of worship at Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh.
