Bathukamma begins across Telangana as Telugu Hindu women celebrate the nine-day flower festival

Bathukamma is a nine-day flower festival celebrated by Telugu Hindu women in Telangana and parts of Andhra Pradesh.

The festival follows the Sathavahana calendar, starting on Pitru Amavasya, which coincides with September or October.

Tradition holds that Bathukamma means Mother Goddess come Alive and represents the cultural spirit of Telangana, corresponding to Sharad Navratri and Durga Puja.

Observances center on arranging seasonal flowers with medicinal values into seven concentric layers shaped like a temple gopuram.

Brothers traditionally bring flowers to their mothers and sisters to arrange the floral tiers.

Participating women wear traditional saris and jewels, while teenage girls wear Langa-Oni half-sarees.

The nine days proceed in order as Engili pula, Atukula, Muddapappu, Nanabiyyam, Atla, Aligina, Vepakayala, Vennela muddala, and Saddhula Bathukamma.

The festivities culminate on the ninth day, known as Saddula Bathukamma or Pedda Bathukamma, marking the beginning of Sharath Ruthu.

For Telugu Hindu women in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the nine-day celebration marks the start of Sharath Ruthu through layered floral arrangements and traditional attire.
